| What's a POINT EVENT? Each year juniors play a tour across the state competing for the honor of being "Junior Player of the Year" in the girls or boys age division for 14-15 year-olds and 16-17 year-olds. It is also a big honor to be listed in the top twenty for each age group. Look at the point events for this year and winners last year by "clicking" on the "Iowa Junior Tour" icon on this site and browse the P.G.A. site under "Junior Tour".
| 2002 Albia Junior Open Leaderboard |
| The 2002 version of the Albia Junior Open was played at the Albia Country Club on Monday, August 5. Eric Duea protected his home course advantage in daring fashion by rolling in a 45-foot putt on the second playoff hole to defeat a pair of Ottumwa golfers to claim the 14-15 year old age division. Adam White of Ottumwa grabbed the early lead with a first round 40 as Nathan Smith of Ottumwa and Duea both fired six-over par 42. Competing in the same group, the trio warmed up to the occasion in the second round as Duea and Smith shot one-under 35 and White fired one-over 37 to finish their 18-hole rounds knotted at 77. All three golfers parred the first playoff hole setting the stage for the drama at the second hole with Duea 45 feet from the hole for par and Smith and White within four feet for their par. Duea sank his long putt as the other two golfers lipped out their par putts. Smith birdied the third hole to defeat White for the second place trophy.
Another Albia junior golfer, Taylor Maas, claimed the 11 year-old and younger division with an impressive 44. Kevin Wynn of Albia was seven shots back with 51.
Dusty Ware of Ottumwa defeated Kale Wyngarden of Ottumwa by two shots when he shot an 81 to claim the 16-17 year old age division trophy.
The day's lowest round was shot by Wenyu Wang of Panora with a one-under par 71 from the front tees of the Albia course. The 13 year-old Des Moines City Champion showed that he would be one of the state's brightest talents by capturing the 12-13 year old division by 10 shots over Luke Goemaat of Albia. Markus Meyers of Pella was third with an 83.
The fourth annual Albia Junior Open will be played Monday, August 4, 2003 and will be one of the top 20 junior events in the state as the tournament has been approved to be one of the point events on the Iowas P.G.A. calendar. Player of the Year honors could be on the line as Albia will be the final stop of the season for the Iowa Junior Golf Tour.
