******BIG NEWS******
The Albia Junior Open will be a point event again in 2004!!!!!
What's a POINT EVENT? Each year juniors play a tour across the state competing for the honor of being "Junior Player of the Year" in the girls or boys age division for 14-15 year-olds and 16-17 year-olds. It is also a big honor to be listed in the top twenty for each age group. Look at the point events for this year and winners last year by "clicking" on the "Iowa Junior Tour" icon on this site and browse the P.G.A. site under "Junior Tour".
2003 Albia Junior Open Leaderboard
The fourth annual Albia Junior Open was played Monday, August 4 at the Albia Country Club with a total of 45 golfers including some of the state's best golfers competing for trophies in four age divisions.
The low score was posted by Adam White of Ottumwa with a 73, three shots better than Eric Duea of Albia with a 76. It was a reversal of last year's outcome, as Duea defeated White in a two-hole playoff for first place. Junior Player of the Year in the state of Iowa for 2003, Nick Powell of Oskaloosa, finished third with a 77. With one point event remaining on the schedule, Powell has a commanding lead in the Player of the Year competition.
In the 14-15 year old division, Tony Wang of Panora prevailed over Albia's Luke Goemaat, 74 to 78 over 18 holes. Wang is fifth in the state point standings for this age division and may close the gap considerably with the 100 points awarded for winning the Albia Junior Open. Colton Cason of Albia finished third with an 85 in this age group that consisted of ten golfers. Christopher Edwards of Ankeny won the 12-13 year old division with an 88, defeating Will Eldrenkamp of Ottumwa by two shots. Aaron Flahive of Albia claimed the third place trophy with a 94.
A talented group of 11 year old golfers and younger was led by Lucas Boyd of Pella with a 44. John Early of Pella shot 45 for second place and Taylor Maas of Ottumwa grabbed the third place trophy from Kevin Wynn of Albia by winning a two hole playoff after both golfers shot 49.
The 16-17 year old girls were represented by Albia High School golfer Morgan Kirk, who fired a 90 over 18 holes for a 13-stroke victory over Bridgett Lansink of Battle Creek. Tara Scieszinski of Albia won the 14-15 year old division with a 111, defeating Aubrey Hardman of Knoxville by nine shots. Kaurie Kincaid of Knoxville won the 12-13 year old grouping with a 54 as Mara Ford from Knoxville shot 64. In the 11 year old and younger division, Kaitlyn Vitko shot 87 to narrowly defeat Brooke Scieszinski of Albia, who had 90.
