2010 Albia Golf Club Championship

The Albia Golf Club Junior Championship was held Monday, July 26 with 29 golfers competing in 10 age divisions.

Drew Schofield won the 14-15 boys divisions with a nine-hole total of 49, while Cy Heffron won the 12-13 division with the same score of 49 over nine holes. Tyler Maddison won a playoff with Landon Hermsen to grab the second place trophy in the 12-13 group after both golfers finised at 50.

In a tightly-contested division that included nine golfers, Brett Baker and Joseph Sinnott both recorded 56 to tie for fourth place.

The future looks bright for Marty Hermsen's conference championships and state tournament trips to continue as these golfers still have two more years before moving to the high school team.

Trent Garver shot a blistering 37 for seven holes to capture the 10-11 boys division and may have been near the low for the tournament if he had been in the the nine-hole group. Kyle Sinnott shot 48 and Wyatt McCarty had a 58 to finish second and third in their group.

In the 8-9 division, Nicholas Piper outlasted Ian Flahive, 87 strokes to 95 strokes to claim the first place trophy. Chase Maddison shot 21 over four holes to defeat Cooper Hassinen and David Fisher in the 6-7 division. Connor Fisher shot 31 in three holes for first place in the five and younger division.

Ariel Lawrence continued her improvement in the 14-15 girls division, shooting 63 over nine holes as she moves to the high school team next year. Cassie Crall had to miss the tournament for driver's ed class, but moves to the high school team as the outstanding incoming freshman with Lawrence. Lexie Van Polen shot 60 over nine holes, defeating Macy Lawrence, who had 74 shots as they move to the Albia team in two years.

Sydney DeBruin shot 46 over six holes to narrowly defeat Jade Van Polen by four shots to claim first place in the 10-11 girls division. Jordan Winke shot 72 for third place in her first year of junior golf. Jena Lawrence shot 48 for five holes in the 8-9 girls division for first place.

The junior league was cancelled three times for rain during the year so they will continue to play on Monday for the next two weeks.
