2009 Albia Golf Club Championship
The Albia Golf Club Junior Championship was held Monday, July 27 with a total of 31 golfers participating in nine age divisions.
In the 14-15 year old boys division, Zach Sulentich continued his fine play this summer by winning a playoff over Erik Schofield after both golfers finished with 45 shots over nine holes. Ben Baker was third with a 67.
Drew Schofield shot 45 for nine holes to defeat Cy Heffron by four shots in the 12-13 boys age division. Brett Baker shot 60 for third place with Anthony Tuttle and Aaron Ambrose completing the group with 70 and 75, respectively.
Playing with a broken left arm, Tyler Piper recorded a 57 for nine holes in the 10-11 boys age division to narrowly defeat Tyler Maddison, who had a 59. Piper had been practicing the summer with his right arm only, keeping perfect balance and a smooth swing to overcome the lack of use of his left arm. He'll have his cast removed in a couple weeks and return to regular form next summer. Maddison had a successful summer campaign in state Pee-Wee tournaments. Landon Hermsen was third with 63 and Wyatt McCarty had 64 for fourth place. Ryan Romanco finished fifth and Matthew Starcevic was sixth.
Trent Garver and Nikki Maddison dueled until the last hole in their nine hole match in the 8-9 year old boys division. Garver won the trophy with a 52 over nine holes while Maddison shot 53. Garrett Gray won the third place trophy with a 72 and Dawson Hermsen was fourth with a 78.
Tyler Piper's brother, Nicholas won the boys 6-7 year old division with a 40 over seven holes. Chase Maddison was second place with a 53 and Ian Flahive was third with a 56.
In the girls division, Cassie Crall won her third title of the month, winning at The Preserve at Rathbun and at Cedar Creek in Ottumwa earlier in the month. Crall shot 58 for a six stroke victory over Ariel Lawrence. Maria Maddy was third with a 72 and Emily Scala had 85.
In the girls 10-11 year old division, Macy Lawrence shot 52 including a chip-in from 40 yards away on number nine to win by eight strokes over Niki Angran. Sydney DeBruin was third with a 75 in the seven hole match.
Jade Van Polen shot 71 over seven holes to win the girls 8-9 year old division and Jena Lawrence won the 6-7 year old division with a 60 on closer tees over seven holes.
