2002 Albia Country Club Championship

The Albia Country Club Junior Championship was held Monday, July 15 with a total of 52 golfers participating in six age divisions.
The low 18-hole score was fired by Eric Duea in the 14-15 year-old division with an 81. Lucas Bigger captured second with an 89, Sean Halbmaier shot a 96 and Nathan Dorpinghaus finished with a 97. Curt Beary was the 16-17 year-old champion with a 101 over 18 holes.
Adam Riley topped Ryan Crall in the boys 14-15 division, 67 to 71 over nine holes.
Luke Goemaat survived a stiff challenge from Colton Cason to win the 12-14 year-old division with an 11-hole total of 48. Cason was three shots back at 51. A total of ten golfers competed in teh age division with Aaron Flahive finishing third with a 55. Drew Yarkosky was fourth with a 58 and Kevin Albrecht fifth a 59.
The 10-11 year-old division provided the most excitement for the day as Nathan Halbmaier and Taylor Maas completed their nine holes deadlocked at 51. Both golfers had a six on the first and second sudden death playoff holes. At the third hole, both golfers were left with putts of over 20 feet for par. Halbmaier took the first advantage by running his putt in the hole, then stood by as Maas ran his 20-footer in right on top of it. At the fourth hole, Halbmaier finally took the championship by a single stroke. Kevin Wynn finished a close third with a 53.
In the 6-9 age division, Blake Leshen narrowly defeated brother, Brett, 48-49 over seven holes. Zach Sulentich was third with a 50. Another Leshen brother, Bryce, captured the five year-old division with a 40 over four holes, with Colton Dorpinghaus and Riley Maas close behind with 43.
In the girl's division, Tara Scieszinski was the 14-15 year-old champion with a 26 over four holes. Kara Goemaat captured the 10-11 age division with a 29, six strokes ahead of Brooke Scieszinski.
Mackenzie Wynn defeated six other girls in the 6-9 division with a 28 over four holes. Liz Gardner was second with a 36 and Cassie Crall third at 38. Lexie VanPolen defeated Macy Lawrence by two shots in the five and under division.
The 2002 junior golf campaign began the first week of June with a two-day clinic followed by league play every Monday until the Junior Championship. A total of 65 golfers from four to 16 years of age competed in the league over the two months.
